Ultimate Matcha Recipe Guide for New Matcha Drinkers

Matcha can be a daunting experience to someone who has not tasted it before, because let's get real, it's a raw leaf powder. Like any leaf being powdered it has its intense greeny health benefits but taste is something we will have to work towards.

Lets start with why you should drink matcha.

ITS A LEAF, ITS GOOD FOR YOU. Like all the spinach that Popeye encouraged us to eat, Matcha is the new spinach. It will be slightly bitter like moringa, but we can work around it. We encourage you to start small and sweet to get accustomed to the taste of matcha and go step by step up the ladder from there. 

In this guide, you'll find beginner-friendly recipes that show just how versatile matcha can be—from delicious lattes and even desserts.

1. Creamy Matcha Latte (Hot)

India likes its tea milky and sweet, and matcha is a perfect compliment to the same milky sweetness drink.

Ingredients:

  1. 1 tsp matcha powder
  2. 60ml hot water
  3. 150ml milk (or a plant-based alternative like almond or oat milk)
  4. Sweetener of choice (optional, honey, maple syrup, or agave)

Instructions:

  • Whisk the matcha: Sift 1 tsp of matcha powder into a cup or bowl. Add hot water and whisk until smooth and frothy. Use a coffee frother to whisk it or just use a shaker and shake vigourously
  • Warm your milk on the stove 
  • Pour the whisked matcha into the warmed milk, stirring gently. Add sweetener if desired.

2. Matcha Smoothie

Ingredients:

  • 1 tsp matcha powder
  • 1 banana
  • 150ml almond milk (or milk of choice)
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds (optional)
  • 1 tbsp honey or sweetener of choice (optional)
  • Ice cubes

Instructions:

  1. Blend the ingredients: Add all ingredients to a blender—matcha, banana, almond milk, chia seeds, honey, and ice cubes.
  2. Blend until smooth: Blend until you achieve a smooth, creamy consistency.
  3. Serve and enjoy: Pour into a glass and enjoy as a healthy breakfast or mid-day pick-me-up!

3. Matcha Overnight Oats

Ingredients:

  • 1 tsp matcha powder
  • ½ cup rolled oats
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds
  • 1 tbsp honey or sweetener of choice
  • 150ml almond milk (or any milk)
  • Fresh fruit toppings (e.g., banana, berries)

Instructions:

  • Mix ingredients: In a jar or bowl, mix the oats, matcha powder, chia seeds, honey, and almond milk.
  • Refrigerate overnight: Cover and refrigerate overnight, or for at least 6 hours.
  • Top and serve: In the morning, top your matcha oats with fresh fruit and enjoy a healthy, matcha-packed breakfast.

4. Matcha Ice Cream


Ingredients:
1 tbsp matcha powder
500ml heavy cream
200ml condensed milk
1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions:

Whisk matcha powder with a small amount of warm water to make a smooth paste.
In a large bowl, mix the heavy cream, condensed milk, vanilla extract, and matcha paste until fully combined.
 Pour the mixture into a container and freeze for at least 4 hours, or until the ice cream is firm.
Scoop and enjoy this homemade matcha ice cream for a refreshing dessert.
